Begonia Cuttings: How Leaf and Stem Propagation Works

Begonias can be propagated from stem cuttings and, in many groups, from leaf tissue. Stem cuttings are usually the most direct choice for cane-type Begonias because they retain a node and existing shoot axis, while leaf propagation exploits the remarkable regenerative capacity found in many rhizomatous and rex-type Begonias.

The best method depends on the cultivar, the tissue available and whether the aim is rapid multiplication or preservation of a particular shoot phenotype.

Can you grow a Begonia from a cutting?

Yes. Many Begonias propagate readily from vegetative tissue. Cane-type plants commonly root from stem sections containing viable nodes. Many rhizomatous and rex-type Begonias can also regenerate adventitious roots and shoots from leaves or leaf sections.

Stem cuttings

For cane-type Begonias, stem cuttings are generally the most direct way to produce a new plant with an established shoot axis. Select firm, healthy material and include viable nodes. Roots can form adventitiously from stem tissue while axillary buds provide new shoot growth.

A clean cut reduces unnecessary tissue damage. Keep the cutting hydrated during the rootless phase, but do not compensate for high humidity by keeping the basal stem continuously saturated.

Leaf cuttings

Many Begonias can regenerate plantlets from leaf tissue. Wounding major veins or placing leaf sections so that suitable tissue remains in contact with moist propagation media can encourage adventitious shoots and roots. This ability varies substantially among Begonia groups and cultivars, so leaf propagation should not be assumed to work equally well for every plant.

Leaf cutting vs stem cutting: which is better?

Use a stem cutting when you want to preserve a selected shoot and the plant provides suitable nodal material. Leaf propagation can be useful when the cultivar regenerates reliably from leaves and the aim is to obtain more propagules from limited stock material. A single leaf may potentially provide several regeneration sites, whereas a stem cutting already contains an organised shoot system and can establish more directly.

Why Begonias can regenerate from leaves

Plant tissues retain developmental plasticity. Following wounding, local cells can alter developmental programmes in response to endogenous hormones, wound signalling and the surrounding environment. In responsive Begonias this can lead to adventitious organ formation and the production of new root-and-shoot systems from tissue that was originally part of a leaf.

What substrate is best for Begonia cuttings?

Use a clean, fine but aerated propagation medium that maintains close moisture contact without remaining anaerobic. Sphagnum, fine propagation mixes, plugs and other substrates can work when water content is controlled. The physical behaviour of the medium matters more than its name: roots and regenerating tissue need moisture, but respiration still requires oxygen.

How humid should Begonia cuttings be?

Leaf sections and fresh stem cuttings have little or no functional root capacity at first, so reducing water loss is important. Enclosed propagators or humidity domes can maintain high atmospheric humidity. However, free water sitting continuously on wounded tissue can encourage deterioration. Moist air and saturated tissue are not the same condition.

As roots and new leaves develop, increase ventilation gradually so the new plant adapts to the humidity in which it will ultimately grow.

Light during propagation

Provide moderate, indirect light while roots and shoots establish. Very intense light increases evaporative demand before the new root system can support it. Extremely low light, meanwhile, limits photosynthetic carbon gain once viable foliage is functioning. Increase light gradually as the propagule establishes.

Temperature and airflow

Warm, stable conditions generally support active regeneration, but warmth also influences microbial growth and substrate drying. Gentle airflow helps avoid stagnant conditions, although strong airflow can dehydrate leaf sections, fresh cuttings and small propagation volumes rapidly.

Why do Begonia cuttings rot?

Rot is not explained by water alone. Tissue condition, sanitation, oxygen availability, temperature, microbial pressure and how long wounds remain saturated all interact. If a cutting repeatedly fails, examine the whole propagation environment rather than simply switching substrate.

Variegated Begonias

Variegation adds another layer of uncertainty. Whether a regenerated plant retains a particular pattern depends on the biological basis of the variegation and which cells contribute to the new meristem. Vegetative propagation can preserve many cultivars reliably, but individual regenerants can still differ.

Where a valuable phenotype is associated with a particular shoot, a stem cutting containing that shoot lineage can be a more conservative choice than regenerating many plantlets adventitiously from leaf tissue.

When should Begonia cuttings be potted up?

Move young plants once they have a functioning root system and enough new growth to tolerate a larger, more variable root zone. Newly regenerated plantlets should also be transitioned gradually from a closed propagator rather than moved immediately into dry room air.

Begonia propagation questions

Can Begonia leaves root in water? Some Begonias can form roots or propagules in water, but water creates a different oxygen and microbial environment from an aerated substrate. If the plant will ultimately grow in substrate, manage the later transition carefully.

Do Begonia cuttings need rooting hormone? Many Begonias possess sufficient endogenous signalling capacity to regenerate without added auxin. Hormone treatment is therefore not automatically necessary, and response varies with tissue and cultivar.

How long do Begonia cuttings take to root? There is no reliable universal number of days. Temperature, cultivar, tissue maturity, light, humidity and root-zone conditions all influence the rate. Use new root and shoot development rather than a fixed calendar.
