Outdoor Tropical Plants
Build an exotic-looking garden with tropical foliage selected for UK conditions. Each listing states whether the plant is suitable for summer display only, mild or coastal gardens, or outdoor cultivation across most of the UK.
Hardiness is shown using the RHS H1a–H7 system and an easy-to-read JungleBotanics UK outdoor suitability label. Ratings are a guide: winter wet, wind, drainage, shelter, plant maturity and local frost pockets can all affect survival.
UK outdoor suitability
- Summer outdoors only (RHS H1b–H1c): place outside after frost when nights are reliably warm; overwinter indoors or frost-free.
- Frost-free or very mild sites (RHS H2): suitable outside where freezing is avoided, normally with winter protection.
- Mild and coastal gardens (RHS H3): approximately -5°C to 1°C in a sheltered, well-drained position.
- Most UK gardens (RHS H4–H5): approximately -15°C to -5°C, subject to the plant’s moisture and shelter requirements.
- Hardy throughout the UK (RHS H6–H7): below approximately -15°C.
Check the hardiness information on the individual plant before planting permanently outdoors.
