Begonia Cucullata Pink Variegated is grown for its contrasting green, pale and pink foliage. Its relatively fast vegetative growth makes it useful for observing how environment and shoot selection affect successive leaves.
Light
Bright, indirect light supports compact growth. Avoid moving protected foliage directly into intense sunlight. Very low light can reduce growth rate and increase the time the substrate remains wet.
Root zone
Use a well-drained medium with enough fine material to maintain even moisture but sufficient structure for gas exchange. Begonia roots are fine, so repeatedly saturating a dense substrate can rapidly reduce oxygen around them.
Watering
Water when the medium has begun to lose excess moisture rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Smaller pots can change moisture content quickly, especially under warm lights and moving air.
Propagation
Stem cuttings with viable nodes are a straightforward way to preserve a selected shoot. Maintain high enough humidity to limit wilting while roots form, but avoid enclosing saturated substrate with no air exchange.
Variegation and selection
Different shoots may display different amounts of coloured tissue. When propagating for a phenotype, evaluate the stem and repeated new growth rather than selecting solely from the appearance of one leaf.
