Begonia stem cuttings root most reliably when the cutting contains a healthy node, the basal wound is kept moist but oxygenated, and humidity is high enough to limit water loss without keeping the stem continuously saturated. The node is important because it contains the buds and meristematic tissues needed to produce new shoots.
Where should you cut a Begonia stem?
Choose a healthy, actively growing stem and make the cut just below a node. A node is the point where a leaf, bud or branch joins the stem. Leave enough stem below the node to place the cutting securely into the rooting substrate without burying large amounts of petiole or leaf tissue.
For many cane, shrub-like and fibrous Begonias, a cutting with one or more healthy nodes can form adventitious roots from the basal stem while an axillary bud develops into the next shoot.
Does a Begonia stem cutting need a node?
For conventional stem propagation, include at least one viable node. Some Begonias can also regenerate from leaf tissue, but that is a different propagation route. If your aim is to reproduce a plant from a stem section, retaining a healthy node gives the cutting a clear source of shoot-producing tissue.

How much leaf should you leave?
Keep enough healthy leaf area to support photosynthesis, but avoid an unnecessarily large leaf canopy on a small cutting. Until new roots develop, the cutting has limited ability to replace water lost through transpiration. Very large leaves can therefore increase wilting under low-humidity conditions.
What substrate is best for Begonia stem cuttings?
The best rooting medium balances moisture with air-filled pore space. Fine, waterlogged media can exclude oxygen from the basal stem, while an excessively dry medium can dehydrate newly forming root initials.
Suitable approaches include an airy propagation mix, a well-managed plug, or other clean rooting media that stay evenly moist without remaining stagnant. The principles are similar to those described in our rooting substrate guide: roots and wounded stem tissue require both water and oxygen.
How deep should a Begonia cutting be planted?
Insert enough of the lower stem to hold the cutting upright and keep the intended rooting region in contact with the medium. Avoid burying leaves or excessive stem tissue. Deep planting can place more tissue into a wet, oxygen-poor zone and can make early rot harder to spot.
Humidity while Begonia cuttings root
Higher humidity reduces the vapour-pressure gradient between the leaf and surrounding air, slowing water loss while the cutting has little or no functional root system. A propagator can therefore improve establishment, particularly in a room with strong airflow.
Humidity should not mean stagnant, permanently wet conditions. Condensation, saturated media and weak air exchange can keep stem surfaces wet for long periods. Aim for high humidity around the foliage while retaining oxygen around the rooting zone.
How much light do Begonia cuttings need?
Use bright but relatively gentle light during early rooting. The cutting needs enough light to maintain metabolism and photosynthesis, but excessive irradiance can increase leaf temperature and transpiration before the new root system can supply enough water.
Why do Begonia stem cuttings rot?
Rot is more likely when damaged tissue remains continuously wet, oxygen around the stem is limited, the medium is too dense, or the cutting was already stressed or damaged. Rot can also spread from compromised tissue, so inspect the basal stem rather than assuming every wilted cutting simply needs more water.
If the substrate remains saturated, increasing watering frequency usually makes the underlying oxygen problem worse rather than better.
When has the cutting rooted?
New shoot growth is encouraging, but it is not always proof of a developed root system because stored resources can support early bud growth. Root resistance, visible roots in a transparent vessel or plug, and sustained new growth are stronger signs that establishment is progressing.
Once roots are functioning, gradually move the cutting toward the humidity and watering regime used for established plants rather than making an abrupt environmental change.
Propagating variegated Begonias
With variegated cultivars, the appearance of the new plant depends on how the variegation is organised within the source tissue. Vegetative propagation can preserve many clonal traits, but the amount and pattern of variegation can still differ between shoots.
