The same rare plant can be sold as an established potted specimen, a rooted cutting, an unrooted node or cutting, or a tissue-culture plantlet. These are not equivalent products: each represents a different stage of plant development and a different level of risk for the buyer.
Understanding those differences makes it easier to compare prices and choose the format that suits your growing experience.
Established potted plant
An established plant has already developed a functioning root system in substrate and is generally producing normal vegetative growth. For most buyers this is the lowest-complexity option because the difficult early rooting or acclimation stages have already occurred.
The trade-off is price. Establishment takes nursery space, time, lighting and labour, so established collector plants commonly cost more than propagation material of the same cultivar.
Rooted cutting
A rooted cutting has produced roots but may not yet have the root mass or shoot development of an established plant. Quality varies substantially: a cutting with several active roots and new shoot growth is biologically further developed than a cutting with one newly emerged root.
Rooted cuttings can offer a useful compromise between cost and establishment risk. After purchase, avoid immediately placing a young root system into an excessively wet, poorly aerated substrate. See our guide to substrate and root-zone conditions for aroid cuttings.
Unrooted cutting or node
An unrooted cutting transfers much more of the propagation risk to the buyer. The node must remain viable while adventitious roots and a new shoot establish. Moisture is necessary, but waterlogged conditions can restrict oxygen around the cut surface and developing roots.
This format can be attractive for experienced propagators or when accessing expensive genetics at a lower initial cost. Tissue-culture plantlet
Tissue culture produces plants in sterile in-vitro conditions using controlled nutrient media and plant growth regulators. The resulting plantlets can be very small and are accustomed to an environment unlike normal household conditions.
The critical transition is acclimation. Plantlets must move from high-humidity in-vitro conditions toward ex-vitro growth while developing roots and leaves capable of functioning efficiently outside the vessel. Acclimated tissue-culture plant
An acclimated tissue-culture plant is different from a plantlet freshly removed from a vessel. Once it has successfully transitioned to normal substrate and lower humidity, much of the specialist acclimation risk has already been passed by the grower. Its value should therefore not be compared directly with an in-vitro plantlet simply because both originated from tissue culture.
Which should a beginner buy?
For a first rare aroid, an established potted plant is generally the simplest choice. A well-rooted cutting can also be suitable if its root system and growth point are healthy. Fresh tissue culture and unrooted cuttings make more sense when you are comfortable managing humidity, moisture and propagation conditions.
Which gives the best value?
The cheapest purchase price is not necessarily the best value. Compare the developmental stage, root system, time required before normal growth, propagation risk and rarity of the genetics. Paying more for an established plant can be rational if it removes months of rooting or acclimation risk.
