Buying a rare plant online involves more than comparing cultivar names and prices. Root condition, propagation stage, plant size, variegation and shipping method can all affect the value and establishment risk of the plant that arrives.
Exact plant or representative plant?
Check whether the photographs show the exact specimen or an example of the available batch. This matters particularly for variegated plants because pattern, leaf count and stem variegation can differ substantially between individuals.
Rooted plant, fresh cutting or tissue culture?
These are different products with different establishment risks. A rooted plant has already completed at least part of the root-establishment stage; a fresh cutting still depends on successful adventitious rooting; an acclimating tissue-culture plant is transitioning from in-vitro physiology. Look beyond the latest leaf
For variegated aroids, inspect the stem and growth point where photographs allow. A highly variegated parent leaf does not guarantee that the next shoot will produce the same pattern. Check the growing stage
Pot diameter alone is not a reliable measure of plant maturity. Consider root establishment, node number, leaf size and whether the plant has resumed active growth after propagation.
