What causes variegation in Philodendron?
Variegated foliage can arise through different biological mechanisms. In many collector cultivars, contrasting sectors reflect differences between cell populations within the shoot meristem. The resulting pattern can therefore change as the stem grows, rather than behaving like a fixed painted pattern on every leaf.

Choosing a plant
Leaf pattern is only one part of selecting a variegated Philodendron. Stem condition, active growth, root establishment and the position of variegated tissue around viable nodes are particularly important when a plant may later be propagated. Very pale growth can be visually striking but has less photosynthetic tissue, so maximum whiteness is not automatically the best indicator of a robust plant.

Light and variegated growth
Variegated leaves contain less photosynthetically active green tissue than fully green leaves. Bright, appropriate light can support compact growth and energy production, but light does not simply create genetically stable variegation. Excessive light can damage leaves, while insufficient light can reduce overall plant performance.
Propagation
Stem propagation depends on a viable node and axillary meristem. A leaf without the necessary meristematic tissue cannot generate a new climbing Philodendron shoot simply because the leaf remains alive. When propagating valuable variegated material, controlling water availability and oxygen around the cutting is often more useful than keeping the substrate continuously saturated.

Reversion
Some variegated plants can produce increasingly green shoots when the actively growing meristem becomes dominated by green tissue.
