Begonia leaf cuttings can produce entirely new plants from leaf tissue, but success depends on the type of Begonia, the tissue used and the conditions around the cutting. Unlike a stem cutting, which already contains a node and shoot system, a leaf cutting relies on adventitious regeneration: new roots and shoots must develop from competent cells in the wounded leaf or vein tissue.
This makes leaf propagation particularly interesting from a plant-science perspective and useful for multiplying many Begonias without removing large amounts of stem material.
Which Begonias can grow from leaf cuttings?
Leaf propagation works especially well in many rhizomatous and rex-type Begonias, although response varies between species and cultivars. Some Begonias regenerate readily from leaf tissue, while others are more reliably propagated from stem cuttings.
Because regeneration ability is strongly influenced by genotype, a method that works quickly on one cultivar should not be treated as a guarantee for every Begonia.
Petiole cuttings vs leaf-section cuttings
There are two useful approaches to Begonia leaf propagation.
Petiole cuttings
An intact healthy leaf is removed with part of its petiole attached. The petiole is inserted into a moist, aerated propagation medium while the leaf blade remains above the surface. New roots and shoots can form around the wounded petiole base or nearby tissues depending on the cultivar.
Leaf-section cuttings
The leaf blade is divided into sections containing major veins. The sections are positioned so that viable vein tissue remains in close contact with the moist propagation surface. Adventitious plantlets can then develop around wounded veins or cut edges.
The important principle is not simply keeping a piece of leaf wet. The tissue must remain alive long enough for wound responses, cell division and organ formation to occur.
Why do new shoots form near Begonia leaf veins?
Major veins contain vascular and associated tissues that can remain physiologically active after the leaf is cut. Wounding changes hormone signalling and gene expression around the damaged tissue. In responsive Begonias, some cells can re-enter division and contribute to adventitious roots and shoots.
This is why good vein contact is more important than burying an entire leaf section deeply in substrate.
Best substrate for Begonia leaf cuttings
The medium should hold enough moisture to prevent the thin leaf tissue from drying while still containing air-filled pore space. Suitable approaches include fine sphagnum-based mixes, coco-based propagation mixes, perlite blends and propagation plugs.
A saturated medium is not automatically better. Constantly waterlogged conditions reduce oxygen around wounded tissue and can favour decay before regeneration has begun.

Humidity and ventilation
Fresh leaf cuttings have little or no functional root system, so relatively high humidity can reduce water loss during the early stage. A propagator or covered tray can therefore be useful.
High humidity does not require stagnant conditions. Condensation, saturated media and no gas exchange can increase the risk of tissue collapse and rot. Once the cutting remains firm and regeneration is progressing, ventilation can be increased gradually rather than removing the cover abruptly.
Light and temperature
Use bright, indirect light rather than intense direct sun. The cutting needs enough light to maintain living tissue, but excessive heat or irradiance can increase water loss before roots have formed.
Stable warmth generally supports metabolic activity and regeneration better than large temperature swings. Avoid placing freshly cut leaves where strong lights heat the propagation container substantially above the surrounding room temperature.
How long do Begonia leaf cuttings take?
There is no reliable universal number of days. Rooting and shoot formation can take several weeks and vary considerably with cultivar, tissue maturity, temperature, light, moisture and the exact propagation method.
Roots may also appear before visible shoots. A cutting that remains firm and clean should not be discarded simply because a plantlet has not appeared quickly.
Common reasons Begonia leaf cuttings fail
Excess saturation: wounded tissue remains oxygen-limited and begins to decay.
Desiccation: leaf sections lose water faster than they can replace it before roots develop.
Poor vein contact: viable regenerative tissue is not positioned against the propagation surface.
Deep burial: too much leaf tissue is held in wet, low-oxygen conditions.
Unsuitable or damaged tissue: old, stressed or already deteriorating leaves may have less capacity to survive the regeneration period.

Can variegated Begonias be propagated from leaf cuttings?
Sometimes, but the exact pattern produced by regenerated plants cannot be assumed to match the parent leaf. Whether variegation is reproduced depends on its biological basis and on which cells contribute to the new shoot during regeneration.
Stable genetic variegation behaves differently from chimeral or developmentally variable patterns. This is one reason regenerated plants from variegated material can show different colour distribution from the tissue they came from.

Begonia leaf cuttings vs stem cuttings
A stem cutting already contains a node and an existing shoot meristem, so propagation mainly requires survival and root establishment. A leaf cutting has no pre-existing shoot node and instead depends on adventitious organ formation.
Stem cuttings are therefore often the more direct route when suitable stem material is available, while leaf propagation can multiply some Begonias from much less parent material.
