A rare houseplant arriving by post has just experienced darkness, restricted airflow, vibration and a sudden change in temperature and humidity. The best response is usually not to repot, feed and heavily water it immediately. First inspect the plant, establish whether there is genuine damage, then give it a stable environment in which to recover.
1. Unpack the plant promptly
Remove the outer packaging soon after delivery and allow the foliage to return to its natural position. Carefully remove protective wrapping without pulling petioles, roots or new growth. If the substrate has been secured for transit, support the pot while removing the packing rather than lifting the plant by its stem.
2. Photograph the plant before changing anything
If there is obvious transit damage, photograph the unopened or newly opened parcel, the packaging and the affected plant before pruning, repotting or washing it. This creates a clear record of its arrival condition and makes it easier to distinguish shipping damage from changes that happen later.
3. Check for real damage versus temporary shipping stress
Drooping leaves, slightly curled foliage and a temporary loss of leaf orientation can occur after time in a box. More concerning signs include extensive blackened tissue, translucent water-soaked patches, collapsed stems, spreading soft rot or a severely disturbed root ball.
One damaged leaf does not necessarily indicate that the whole plant is failing. The condition of the stem, growth point and roots is usually more important for long-term recovery.
4. Check the substrate before watering
Do not automatically water a newly delivered plant. Feel the substrate and consider the weight of the pot. A plant packed while adequately hydrated may still be moist when it arrives, and adding more water can unnecessarily reduce root-zone aeration.
If the medium is genuinely dry and the plant requires water, irrigate normally and allow excess water to drain. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water simply because the foliage looks wilted.
5. Do not rush to repot
Repotting immediately combines shipping stress with root disturbance and a sudden change in root-zone conditions. Unless the substrate is clearly unsuitable, the root system is badly displaced, or active rot needs intervention, allowing the plant to stabilise first is usually the lower-stress option.

6. Give it moderate light first
Move the plant into bright but controlled light rather than placing it immediately under the strongest grow light or in direct sun. During shipping, photosynthesis and transpiration have been heavily restricted. A gradual return to normal growing conditions reduces the chance of adding light and water stress at the same time.
7. Keep temperature stable
Avoid radiators, cold windows, draughts and rapid temperature changes during the first stage of recovery. This is particularly important for tropical plants delivered during colder UK weather. For more detail, see our UK winter plant-shipping guide.
8. Humidity can help, but avoid sealing a wet plant
Moderately elevated humidity can reduce water loss while a stressed root system recovers, but placing a wet plant into stagnant, saturated conditions can create other problems. Good humidity management should reduce excessive transpiration without keeping foliage and substrate permanently wet.

9. Avoid fertilising immediately
A newly arrived plant does not need a strong fertiliser dose simply because it looks stressed. Fertiliser cannot directly reverse physical shipping damage. Resume an appropriate feeding programme once the plant is hydrated, stable and returning to active growth.
10. Watch the growth point and roots
For rare aroids, the viability of the stem, node and growth point is often more informative than the appearance of an older leaf. A plant can lose a leaf after shipping and still recover strongly if the stem and root system remain healthy.

How long should a delivered plant take to settle?
There is no fixed number of days. Recovery depends on species, plant size, root condition, journey length, temperature and the difference between the previous and new growing environment. Judge recovery by tissue firmness, stable hydration, healthy roots and eventually new growth rather than expecting every leaf to look perfect immediately.
