But a plant being an aroid does not make it rare, and a variegated plant is not automatically scarce. Availability depends on propagation rate, commercial production, genetics and how much established stock is circulating in the UK.

What is an aroid?
An aroid is a plant in the family Araceae. Many popular tropical houseplants belong to this family, although their growth habits vary considerably. Some climb, some creep along the substrate, and others grow from compact stems, rhizomes, corm-like structures or self-heading growth points.
This diversity is one reason a single care or propagation method cannot be applied perfectly to every aroid. Root aeration, water availability, temperature and light remain important across the group, but the way individual genera grow affects how they should be supported and propagated.
Which rare aroids are collected in the UK?
UK collectors grow a broad range of aroids, but several genera dominate the specialist houseplant market.
Monstera
Monstera includes some of the best-known collector aroids. Interest ranges from white, yellow and unusual patterned forms to species and cultivars valued primarily for mature leaf shape. What makes an aroid rare?
Rarity is mainly a supply question. A plant may be scarce because very little propagation stock exists, because it multiplies slowly, because a desirable phenotype is difficult to maintain, or because commercial production has not yet scaled.
Rarity can therefore change. Once more growers hold mother plants or a cultivar enters reliable tissue-culture production, supply can increase quickly. Our guide to what makes a houseplant rare explains these market and biological factors in more detail.
Are variegated aroids always rare?
No. Variegation and rarity describe different things. A variegated cultivar can be mass-produced, while a non-variegated species can remain genuinely difficult to obtain.
Different forms of variegation also behave differently during propagation. Pattern stability depends on the underlying developmental or genetic mechanism and, in some plants, on which tissues contribute to a new growth point.

What should you check before buying a rare aroid?
Check the actual size and establishment of the plant, not only the cultivar name. Rooted and actively growing plants are at a different production stage from fresh cuttings or recently acclimated tissue-culture plantlets.
For variegated plants, examine the current growth and stem where relevant rather than assuming one highly variegated leaf guarantees identical future growth. Also check whether the listing photograph shows the actual plant or is clearly identified as representative.

Established plant, cutting or tissue culture?
Each can be a sensible way to buy a collector aroid, but they carry different trade-offs.
An established plant has already completed rooting and a period of conventional growth. A cutting can cost less but still needs to form or expand a functional root system and activate new growth. Tissue-culture plantlets can make previously scarce cultivars much more accessible, but freshly acclimating material requires careful transition from in-vitro conditions.

How should rare aroids be potted?
There is no single ideal “aroid mix.” The important physical properties are the balance between water retention and air-filled pore space around the roots. A substrate that remains saturated for too long can restrict oxygen, while one that dries excessively fast can leave a small root system unable to maintain water uptake.
Container size, temperature, airflow, plant size and watering frequency all alter how a substrate behaves. This is why copying an ingredient list without considering the growing environment can give inconsistent results.

Why do rare aroid cuttings rot?
Rot is usually better understood as a failure of the cutting-environment system than as a need to let every cut surface dry for a fixed number of hours. Excess water, poor gas exchange, damaged tissue, low temperature and pathogen pressure can all contribute.
A cutting still needs enough water to avoid severe desiccation, so the goal is not simply to keep it dry. The rooting zone needs moisture while retaining adequate oxygen. Read why aroid cuttings rot for a fuller explanation.
Do rare aroids need high humidity?
Many tropical aroids tolerate or benefit from moderate-to-high humidity, but humidity should not be considered in isolation. Air movement, temperature, light, substrate moisture and the plant's root system all affect transpiration and water balance.

Do climbing aroids need support?
Many climbing Monstera, Philodendron, Scindapsus and Raphidophora can change their growth when allowed to climb. Suitable support can help maintain orientation and may encourage progressively larger mature foliage under adequate light and nutrition.
Can rare aroids be propagated at home?
Many can, but the method depends on plant anatomy. Climbing aroids are often propagated from stem sections containing a viable node and growth point. Other genera may be divided or propagated through offsets and specialised structures.
