Brassaiopsis fatsioides is a rarely offered member of the Araliaceae, grown for its bold, tropical-looking foliage and heavily armed green stems. Young plants develop strongly textured, toothed leaflets before producing increasingly dramatic foliage as they mature.

Pot size: 2 litre nursery pot
Availability: Currently out of stock

The photographs show the expected type and approximate size. When restocked, you will receive one plant of similar size and likeness. Height, branching, leaf shape and spine development will vary naturally.

Plant characteristics

  • Rare Asian foliage shrub in the ivy and Fatsia family.
  • Bold, textured green leaves with a tropical appearance.
  • Distinctive thorny stems and petioles.
  • Suitable for a large container, sheltered courtyard or experimental exotic planting.

Light

Grow in partial shade or bright filtered light. Protect a newly received plant from an abrupt move into intense sun. A sheltered position helps reduce damage to the large leaves.

Watering and substrate

Use a fertile, moisture-retentive but freely draining growing medium. Water during active growth before the root ball dries completely, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging. Container plants will require less water during cool, slow-growing conditions.

Temperature and UK growing

Published UK experience with Brassaiopsis fatsioides remains limited. Treat young plants conservatively: keep them frost-free or provide substantial winter protection until well established. In mild, sheltered gardens it may be tested outdoors in a protected position, but winter wet, wind and local frost pockets can affect survival.

For more detail, read our Brassaiopsis fatsioides UK care and growing guide.

Important handling information

The stems and leaf stalks carry sharp spines. Wear sturdy gloves when moving, pruning or repotting the plant, and position it away from paths, children and pets.
