Zamioculcas Chameleon ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas Chameleon ZZ Plant is a distinctive collector ZZ whose fresh foliage emerges in bright lime-to-golden tones before maturing greener. It combines unusual colour with the resilient growth habit associated with Zamioculcas, making it a strong choice for indoor collectors who want something different from a standard ZZ plant.
Zamioculcas Chameleon care
Provide bright, indirect light for compact growth and strong colour. Established ZZ plants tolerate lower light, but growth is usually slower and new foliage may be less vivid. Avoid sudden exposure to intense direct sun.
Watering and substrate
Allow the substrate to dry substantially between waterings. Zamioculcas stores water in its rhizomes and thickened tissues, so prolonged saturation is a much greater risk than brief dryness. Use a free-draining, aerated mix and avoid leaving the pot standing in water.
Temperature and humidity
Normal indoor humidity is generally sufficient once established. Warm, stable conditions support faster growth, while cold and persistently wet substrate can increase the risk of root or rhizome decline.
Why does Chameleon change colour?
New leaves emerge much brighter than mature foliage and gradually shift toward greener tones as chlorophyll develops. This colour transition is a normal feature of the cultivar rather than a sign of nutrient deficiency or disease.
Growth habit and propagation
Zamioculcas grows from underground rhizomes and produces upright stems from this storage tissue. Propagation can be slow compared with many climbing aroids, and newly propagated material often takes time to form a strong rhizome and root system.
