Begonia melanobullata is an unusual Vietnamese species Begonia grown for heavily bullate leaves covered with dark, conical projections and fine hairs. Mature foliage develops an exceptionally sculptural texture unlike most commonly available Begonias.

The photograph shows the expected size and type. When plants become available, you will receive one Begonia melanobullata of similar size rather than the exact plant pictured. Leaf number, colour, bullae development and overall shape will vary naturally between individual plants and growth stages.

Plant characteristics

  • Rare species Begonia native to Vietnam.
  • Distinctive dark, hair-tipped conical bullae.
  • Strongly textured green foliage.
  • Compact rhizomatous growth suited to controlled indoor or terrarium culture.

Light

Provide bright, filtered or indirect light. Avoid sudden exposure to strong direct sun, which can scorch the textured leaves. Very low light can slow growth and reduce the plant’s ability to replace older foliage.

Humidity and airflow

This species performs best with consistently elevated humidity, but the enclosure should not remain stagnant. Gentle air movement and ventilation help limit persistent surface moisture and support healthy leaf development.

Watering and substrate

Use a loose, moisture-retentive but aerated substrate. Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth without leaving it permanently saturated. Watering frequency should respond to enclosure conditions, temperature, root activity and substrate drying rate.

Temperature

Maintain warm, stable conditions and protect the plant from cold draughts. During darker UK winter conditions, growth and water use may slow, so check the substrate rather than watering according to a fixed summer schedule.

Leaf development

The pronounced dark bullae develop from relatively young foliage, helping distinguish Begonia melanobullata from similar species. New leaves can appear lighter or hairier before hardening and darkening. Texture, colour and size change as each leaf matures.

What you will receive

When restocked, this listing will supply one established Begonia melanobullata in a 9 cm nursery pot, selected to be of similar size to the photographed example. As this is a living plant, individual leaf number and appearance will vary.

UK delivery

Live plants are packed carefully and dispatched within the United Kingdom on JungleBotanics dispatch days. Minor cosmetic marks and natural variation between leaves are normal for textured foliage plants.
